Petrykivka painting is a traditional Ukrainian decorative painting style, originating from the village of Petrykivka in Dnipropetrovsk oblast of Ukraine, where it was traditionally used to decorate house walls and everyday household items. The earliest known examples of this style date from the 18th century, but it continues to thrive and develop as a modern art form.
One of the main techniques in Petrykivka painting is that the transition of colors is done with one stroke. It is almost impossible to make (reliable) copies, because even for the same author they will be different. It all depends on the number of different paints on the brush.
Some things with patterns in the way of Petrykivka painting have been preserved since the XVIII century. The origin of Petrykivka painting is associated with the Cossacks and the settlement of the Dnieper region by immigrants from Poltava, Slobozhanshchyna and Podillia in the XVIII century and in the first half of the XIX century. However, it is not known where and when the customs that formed the basis of this direction of painting developed.
On December 5, 2013, the Petrykivka painting was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
